Young Democrats, what do you think of your current health insurance plan?
I LOVE IT!
It's ok, I guess
I'm under-insured - they won't cover the important stuff
I'm in danger of losing it due to high cost/lack of job security
I don't have insurance/Can't afford it

YDO Joins ODP Chair's Call for Rep. Kern to Resign

April 28, 2011

  Dear Young Democrat,
On April 27, State Representative Sally Kern (R-Oklahoma City) said on the floor of the Oklahoma House of Representatives that “women do not want to work as hard as men...” and that “[Oklahoma has] a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school? I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them.”

On behalf of the hard-working women and minorities across Oklahoma, the Young Democrats of Oklahoma are joining Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair Todd Goodman in asking Rep. Kern to resign from the legislature.  “She does not represent my work ethic or desires for women in this state,” said Ally Glavas, Chair of the Young Democrats of Oklahoma Women’s Caucus. "Rep. Kern's comments are a slap in the face to hard-working Oklahoma women and minorities who serve this great state every day as police officers, firefighters, teachers, doctors, and even as colleagues of Rep. Kern at the legislature," said Cierra Maddox, Chair of the Young Democrats' Minority Caucus.

“It is time for Sally Kern to stop degrading any citizen in Oklahoma. We have no second-class citizens in our state, only Oklahomans,” stated Jeff Riles, Chair of the YDO LGBT Caucus. He added, “This should be a sign to all Oklahomans, and especially to Young Democrats, that elections have severe consequences, and we have to mobilize and get organized to protect the rights of all Oklahomans.”  Maddox agrees, "Young people must recognize that our involvement is a necessary component to ensuring that our elected officials are working to represent all Oklahomans."

The statements of Rep. Kern remind us that our voice is more important than ever in Oklahoma politics. If you're as determined as we are to create a future for Oklahoma where every Oklahoman is treated with dignity and respect by their elected officials; a future where our problems are solved by creating policy that provides every Oklahoman an equal opportunity at success, give $5, $10, or $25 today to ensure that the Young Democrats of Oklahoma have the resources we need to combat the continued embarrassing statements being made by out of touch Republican leaders like Sally Kern.     Make your voice heard and give today!       Democratically yours, Brittany M. Novotny, President Young Democrats of Oklahoma

Young Democrats Celebrate Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Policy

Oklahoma City, OK – Young Democrats of Oklahoma are celebrating today, as months of making phone calls, writing letters, and lobbying Congress has resulted in the repeal of the discriminatory policy known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which required gay and lesbian service members to hide their orientation or face discharge from the armed services.
