Casandra Ulbrich was elected in 2006 to an eight-year term on the Michigan State Board of Education, effective January 1, 2007.
Casandra serves as the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations for Wayne State University, where she is responsible for raising funds for research, scholarships and university programs, including securing $4.95 million for entrepreneurship training.
Before joining WSU in 2001, Casandra served as a Press Secretary to former U.S. House Democratic Whip David Bonior, acting as the official spokesperson for the Congressman. She has also been a small business owner.
Casandra serves on several local and national boards, including Automation Alley’s STEM education committee, Detroit Healthy Neighborhoods, and the Walter P. Reuther Library Advisory Board. Casandra also serves on the National Association of State Boards of Education Government Affairs Committee, which advises Congress on Federal education policy.
A graduate of Leadership Detroit, Casandra was recently recognized as one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ 40 Under 40. In 2008, she received an honorary degree from St. Clair County Community College after delivering the college’s commencement address.
The first in her family to earn a college degree, Casandra earned an Associates Degree from St. Clair County Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), and a Masters Degree in Communication from Wayne State University. She is currently completing a Ph.D. (ABD) in Communication, also from Wayne State University.
Casandra and her husband, David Williams, share their home in Rochester Hills, with their two dogs, Bailey and Jaxon.
