Fabulous First Family Dinner!

Thank you all so incredibly much for making the 1st Family Dinner in San Francisco so special.  The event was, I believe, both fun and effective.  I am delighted to be part of your "community of the willing" as we stare down these next two months and the work that we'll do to move Obama into the White House and to safeguard essential rights by defeating prop 8.

San Francisco for Obama Launches Website

SF for Obama, a fabulous grassroots group that is making it happen, just put up its website.

For folks in the Bay Area, this is the place to go to connect to the Obama campaign for phonebanking, traveling to swing states, and organizing fundraisers.

We'll be plugging their events between now and Election Day.  At our first Family Dinner, on September 6th, you can sign up for their actions.

Answering the Call: Reflecting on June 17th

By Nilka Julio

When we put the call out to our friends to celebrate the weddings it was dynamic to have the majority of the folks who showed up identify as straight. There was so much to see and even more to feel.  What moved me was seeing the faces of children as their parents were married. That is the key, that is the change, the youth. The next event I will make it a point to invite my younger friends. I saw lots of children and youth at City Hall which amped up the energy level even further.

Photos from June 17 Celebration

Visit the Photo Gallery to check out photos from our June 17th celebration. Sixteen of us gathered at City Hall to cheer on marrying couples, and then headed out for dinner and drinks.

CA State Supreme Court Strikes Down Ban on Gay Marriage

In a historic ruling, the CA state supreme court struck down a ban on gay marriage. The implications of this are still unfolding. In the short term, it means that gay couples can legally marry in California, as they can in Massachusetts. There is speculation that the case will be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. You can read emerging commentary from the National Center for Lesbian Rights, a lead counsel in the case.

Also in California, opponents of gay marriage are working to get an anti-marriage amendment on the November ballot. They have submitted sufficient signatures to do so, and these are currently being verified. If the ballot were to pass, it would render null and void the supreme court ruling.

Quoting from an AP story (via the NYT), the court's ruling included this groundbreaking language:

In striking down the ban, the court said, "In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual's sexual orientation -- like a person's race or gender -- does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold
legal rights."
